Room Within A Room is a sound piece exploring the combination of sound heard from headphones with external speakers. It is shown in two variations. For both versions, a binaural recording of a long tone in a small room plays through headphones worn by the audience. The first variation explores dynamics of space as external stereo sounds fluctuate against the binaural recording in the headphones. The second variation distributes different static tones throughout a room, allowing the listener to explore different combinations of tones with the headphones by changing their physical position in the room.
(developed during a residency at Diapason Gallery, Brooklyn, NY January 2010.)
Room Within A Room(inverted) is another variation where a single speaker plays one tone into a room. Sets of headphones are available to the listeners in the room, each containing an iPod shuffle model that plays different tracks of isolated overtones from the room tone which shift in and out of tune or harmonize with the external room tone.
